Visiting Artist Workshop: Printing on Gold-Leaf Paper
with Visiting Artist: Barrie Lynn Bryant
SPONSORED BY HAHNEMÃHLE USA. ALL MATERIALS INCLUDED.
Learn the process of printing images onto karat gold leaf paper by the pioneer and developer of the process, Wyoming artist Barrie Lynn Bryant. This workshop will introduce the use of karat gold leaf and the gilding process, how to properly adhere karat gold leaf onto fine art paper, and to see how images become illuminated when printed onto the gilded surface using a wide format pigment ink printer.
During part 1 of the class, students will be briefed about the historical use of gold leaf and how it is manufactured and sold for use by the practitioners known as gilders. Students will watch a teacher demonstration of the gilding process, after which they’ll practice preparing and gilding the paper surface using their very own book of karat gold leaf. Students will also work with an instructor, provided gold leaf paper (gilded with composition metal leaf by instructor prior to workshop) and coat it with digital ground in preparation for printing.
Part 2 involves understanding the types of images that might work best for printing onto the gilded surface, how to setup the printer for printing onto the gilded paper, printing onto the gilded paper, and finishing the work.
