The Hootenanny 2024
Celebrating the Life and Music of Hank Phibbs
Event info
Once a year, the Hootenanny trades in its usual Monday-night venue in Moose, WY, and performs an in-town version of the long-running tradition. Talented pickers, founding performers, and long-time stalwarts take the stage to perform covers and originals – all acoustically.
The Hootenanny began in the 1950s and continues to be a home for some of Jackson’s best musicians. The yearly gathering at The Center allows Jackson-based talent to belt out their tunes on the large stage and share the magic captured in front of the Tetons.
On October 4th, 2023, the Hoot community suddenly lost one of our primary leaders and closest friends, Hank Phibbs, to a very aggressive cancer. During the early Hoots in 1993, Hank played in a band called The Jury Is Out, with a local judge and other lawyers. He developed an interest in dobro guitar and, throughout the last 30 years, has played backup to more musicians more times than anyone else. Since Dick Barker died in 2012, Hank played the major leadership role together with Bill Briggs. Hank was the primary announcer, seeing a warm and friendly tone for the evening, and excelled in bringing people together. He was always friendly, approachable, and encouraging. Plus, Hank provided sound judgment in tough times. The Hootenanny family miss him a lot.
