Join us to celebrate visiting artist Zaira Ávalos in the Center Theater Gallery. Ávalos is a designer, architect, and printmaker from Oaxaca, Mexico, and a member of the band La China Sonidera that is performing on the Center Stage, Saturday, September 20th. Ávalos creates illustrations primarily about and for Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Oaxacan girls and young women. Through graphic art, she works to help girls and women understand their rights, participate in political decisions in their communities, and strive to strengthen their emotional and physical health. Many of these illustrations, as well as educational games, are taken to different Indigenous communities in Oaxaca to raise awareness about women’s rights.

Únase a nosotros para celebrar la visita de la artista Zaira Ávalos en la Galería del Teatro del Centro. Ávalos es un diseñador, arquitecto y grabador de Oaxaca, México y miembro de la banda La China Sonidera que se presentará en el Center Stage el sábado 20 de septiembre. Ávalos crea ilustraciones principalmente sobre y para niñas y mujeres jóvenes indígenas y afromexicanas oaxaqueñas. A través del arte gráfico, trabaja para ayudar a niñas y mujeres a comprender sus derechos, participar en decisiones políticas en sus comunidades y esforzarse por fortalecer su salud física y emocional. Muchas de estas ilustraciones, así como juegos educativos, son llevadas a diferentes comunidades indígenas de Oaxaca para generar conciencia sobre los derechos de las mujeres.
