Teton Science Schools is proud to honor the Kingdom of Bhutan with the Murie Spirit of Conservation Award, for its dedication to environmental preservation, making it the first-ever country to receive the esteemed recognition. Her Majesty Tseyring Pem Wangchuck, the Queen Mother of Bhutan, will also be presented with the Champion of Rising Leaders Award in acknowledgment of her efforts in inspiring and nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders. Her Majesty will accept the Murie Spirit Award on behalf of Bhutan. Following the award ceremony, a roundtable discussion will take place featuring Bhutanese environmentalists and conservationists. The discussion will be moderated by M. Margaret McKeown, a Senior United States Circuit Judge from the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Established in honor of the late leaders of the American conservation movement, Olaus and Margaret “Mardy” Murie and Adolph and Louis Murie, this annual award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to protecting wildlife and wild places.

Bhutan is firmly committed to environmental preservation and upholds the conservation of the environment as one of the four fundamental pillars of its Gross National Happiness philosophy. Bhutan’s steadfast commitment to preserving its natural heritage serves as an inspiring example for nations across the globe by setting a high standard for environmental stewardship, leaving a legacy for generations to come.

Her Majesty’s commitment to environmental conservation and her efforts to promote sustainability has been a profound source of inspiration for countless individuals and organizations worldwide. Through her work as co-chair of the Bhutan Foundation, her support of the Bhutanese philosophy of Gross National Happiness has helped transform Bhutan into a renowned model for sustainability and overall well-being. The development philosophy of Gross National Happiness guides the government of Bhutan. It includes an index used to measure a population’s collective happiness and well-being. She also serves as the President of the Bhutan Youth Development Fund, an organization dedicated to nurturing the potential of Bhutan’s youth.

Previous Murie Spirit awardees include: Jane Goodall, Rose Marcario, Robert Stanton, Jimmy Chin, Bert Raynes, Sally Jewell, Harrison Ford, John Turner, Addie Donnan, Luther Propst, George Schaller, Robert Krear, and Gretchen Long.

About the Murie Ranch
The Murie Ranch is named for conservationists, ecologists and married couples Margaret (Mardy) and Olaus Murie, and Adolph and Louise Murie. The Muries purchased the STS dude ranch in 1945, which served as their home and a hub for the conservation movement. In 1997, The Murie Center was established as a non-profit to steward the Murie Ranch and the legacy of the Muries. In 2015, the Murie Ranch became a campus of Teton Science Schools. We continue to use the ranch to inspire engagement with nature and connect people to their public lands.
