Subversive Souvenirs – Horacio Rodriguez

Subversive Souvenirs exhibit, by Horacio Rodriguez, runs October 27th through December 31 2021 in the Center Theater Gallery and is made possible with support from the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund, Wyoming Humanities and Anvil Hotel.

The collective works in Subversive Souvenirs explore issues such as identity, cultural appropriation, immigration, and assimilation. Rodriguez takes inspiration from the Indigenous cultures of the Americas, the Mexican Muralists of the 1920’s, and Chicano Artists of the 1970’s and 80’s. He is a champion of the outsider and a child of the 1980’s, incorporating the iconography and neon-colored materialistic symbols of his childhood into his work.

His creative process involves consecutive firings to build up multiple layers on the surface of the clay that are infused with original and appropriated imagery. He also employs the latest in 3-D scanning and printing technologies, coupled with centuries-old Pre-Columbian artifacts and ceramic processes, to create a unique, hybrid mix of politically charged, ceramic sculpture.

Los trabajos colectivos en “Subversive Souvenirs” (Recuerdos Subversivos) exploran temas como la identidad, la apropiación cultural, la inmigración y la asimilación. Rodríguez se inspira en las culturas indígenas de las Américas, los muralistas mexicanos de los años veinte y los artistas chicanos de los años setenta y ochenta. Es un campeón de los forasteros y un niño de la década de 1980, incorporando la iconografía y el color neón; símbolos materialistas de su infancia en su obra.

Su proceso creativo implica cocciones consecutivas para construir múltiples capas en la superficie de la arcilla que se infunden con imagenes originales y apropiadas. También emplea lo último en tecnología de escaneo e impresión en 3-D, junto con antiguos artefactos precolombinos y procesos ceramicos centenarios, para crear una mezcla única e híbrida de escultura ceramica cargada políticamente
