The Center Theater Gallery will host a new exhibit entitled “Save the Reef” featuring the artwork of 35 international fiber artists from the US, Canada, Australia, Spain, Israel, United Kingdom. This traveling exhibit is meant to grow public awareness about the need to save the reef through colorful textiles that tell a story. The textile exhibit will launch its international tour in The Center Theater Gallery on October 10.
Exhibit curator and weaver, Doris Florig, is the Artist-in-Residence at the Teton Science School Kelly Campus during the summer months. Doris has traveled the world learning traditional techniques from indigenous people from many different cultures. Weaving since 1970, she specializes in tapestry weaving, fiber sculpting and dyeing her own yarns. In the winter season, she can be found on her sailboat with her husband weaving away in the warmer hemisphere.
Doris invited fiber artist from around the world to contribute individual pieces to the exhibit to collectively convey a message about the fragile state of the reefs. The goal of the project is to stimulate discussions and promote action to protect our oceans for future generations.
“The reefs are dying, and people don’t see it,” remarked Ms. Florig. “They look at the little patches of brightly colored coral awing over the beauty of what is still alive and don’t see the graveyard below. Their vision is rose-colored and we need to burst their bubble. We hope that once they understand and learn what is happening, they will begin to care. The reef is dying, and I feel the urgent need to do something about it which is why I created this traveling exhibit.”
“Doris Florig has been working collaboratively with The Center and many community members for several months to bring this exhibit to life,” said Oona Doherty, Creative Initiatives Director at The Center. We are pleased to be able to support her vision by providing a venue, resources, and support to help launch this fiber arts exhibit with a conservation message.”
