Jackson, Wyo. – The mixed media and poetry exhibit “Poetry Apothecary” will be on display at the Center for the Arts from June 15th through the end of July. Over twenty local and regional writers and artists contributed original poems and visual works to the exhibition. The exhibition will be open for live viewing with attention to social distancing. In addition, virtual experiences of the exhibition will come online in June.

Proposed well before the global pandemic shifted the landscape of our interactions and community engagements, “Poetry Apothecary” was envisioned by its creator, Matt Daly, as, “a collaborative collection of original poems and visual artworks made by local poets and artists who acknowledge the power of poetry to serve as a balm, a poultice, a splint, a placebo, a treatment, a remedy, a prescription, or perhaps even a cure for some of what ails us in our times of need for healing.” The times we are living in now are nothing if not in need of healing.

Poets, working independently or in collaboration with visual artists, were asked to compose original poems written with an intention toward treating and/or healing an ailment or malady. Daly, the Assistant Director of Jackson Hole Writers, proposed the exhibition to run concurrently with the Jackson Hole Writers Conference in June. Although the live conference was canceled and Jackson Hole Writers shifted to online programming this spring, Daly remained excited to pursue the exhibition. “For a long time, I have leaned into poetry as an artform that helps me in times of need. I also find myself drawn to other artforms as a sort of self-care, a remedy even, when I struggle. I wanted to curate a show that would offer poetry and artwork as active agents in how we heal through hard times. So the exhibit felt important before the COVID-19 pandemic and then much more so during the difficult recent months.”
