Mark your calendar for the kick-off event to the backcountry ski and snowboard season; Avalanche Awareness night is slated for Thursday, December 5th at Center for the Arts from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. “Avy Night” provides winter backcountry users with valuable information on early season snow conditions, equipment, clothing, wildlife closure areas, ski resort programs, local avalanche classes, pass etiquette and guide services. Attendees have an opportunity to visit with representatives of avalanche safety equipment manufacturers, examine equipment, and ask questions. In addition, participants can take advantage of discounts offered at the event for buying equipment or signing up for an avalanche class.

Because Avalanche Awareness Night night aims to be a conduit for avalanche education, we have an array of expert speakers for the program portion of the evening, which begins at 6:30. The MC of the event, Jim Woodmencey, a local meteorologist, will weigh in on “This Winter’s Weather/ Powder Outlook.” Jay Pistono, Teton Pass Ambassador, will share how to “Ski the Pass and Do It Right.” Brenden Cronin of WYDOT will help put a face to the WYDOT team. Mike Rheam of the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center and Sarah Carpenter of the American Avalanche Institute, will explain the early season snowpack. AJ Wheeler of Teton County Search and Rescue will discuss “Preventative Search and Rescue”. Our Keynote Speaker Noah Howell, ski guide and global ski mountaineer will present “Aspects: Adventures on the Archangel Ridge,” a story of adventure and lessons learned from remote Mount Foraker. Noah Howell’s attendance is underwritten by the Steve Romeo Memorial Fund.

Avalanche Awareness Night is a fundraiser for the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (BTAC) and Teton Country Search and Rescue (SAR). A huge Gear Raffle, which includes a JHMR Grand Pass, has helped raise thousands of dollars for BTAC. The suggested $5 entry fee supports SAR.
