Oaxacan Cumbia band La China Sonidera makes a big impact in Jackson
JACKSON, WY – Oaxacan Cumbia band La China Sonidera made a big impact during their visit to Center for the Arts in Jackson Hole in September.
The 10-piece modern Cumbia band from Oaxaca, Mexico, made their United States debut on September 20th, 2025, in The Center Theater. Their visit was the culmination of a years-long effort to share their music with the greater Jackson Hole community. The project was made possible by the generous support of the Alumbra Innovations Foundation and the Wyoming Arts Council.

An intimate pop-up performance at Center for the Arts provided a preview to community members during the opening reception for band member Zaira Ávalos’ art exhibit, celebrating the people and culture of Oaxaca, Mexico. Ávalos, a designer, architect, and printmaker from Oaxaca, creates illustrations primarily about Indigenous and Afro-Mexican girls and young women from Oaxaca. She works to help girls and women understand their rights, participate in political decisions in their communities, and strive to strengthen their emotional and physical health.
