Esperanza Spalding brings edgy new music to The Center

The GRAMMY-winning singer-composer-bassist will perform live on Friday, July 31st

Since her early years to her current success as a creative musician, Esperanza Spalding has charted her own course. The young bassist/vocalist/composer was one of the biggest breakout stars of 2011, garnering Best New Artist at the 53rd Grammy® Awards. This is unprecedented by a jazz musician, and Spalding continues to make the unprecedented her norm.

The 30-year-old Portland, Oregon native will present her newest project, “Emily’s D+ Evolution,” that delves into a broader concept of performance by integrating her childhood interests of theater, poetry and movement. Originally conceived the day before her birthday, during a “sleepless night of full moon inspiration,” Emily’s D+ Evolution will feature all new material that “unfolds as live musical vignettes.”

“Emily is my middle name, and I’m using this fresh persona as my inner navigator. This project is about going back and reclaiming un-cultivated curiosity, and using it as a compass to move forward and expand,” says Spalding. “My hope for this group is to create a world around each song, there are a lot of juicy themes and stories in the music. We will be staging the songs as much as we play them, using characters, video, and the movement of our bodies."

Spalding will showcase her new persona in the Emily’s D+Evolution 2015 Tour, which is making a stop at The Center Theater in Jackson on Friday, July 31 at 8PM. This is a must-see musical experience!
