Musicians, comics, clowns and performers of every ilk – solos, duos, trios and bigger bands as well – the finest of Jackson Hole's homegrown talent comes out of the woodwork for an all-local, deep-winter, cabin fever-busting evening of entertainment.
Mountaineering minstrel James Booth assembles the talent and emcees the evening of melody- and merry-making. A regular performer and host of the popular local music spotlight "Live in the Hole" on KHOL Jackson Community Radio, James Booth is uniquely connected to the regional music scene’s many and varied players. Last summer, he logged his 100th performance at the Jackson Hole Hootenanny, a major milestone for any local musician. Booth also is the House Sound Technician at the Center Theater, and works regularly for the valley’s various theater groups, including Off Square Theatre Company, Jackson Community Theater, and Riot Act, Inc.
"As amazing as it is to find so many performers of such high quality in our neck of the wilderness," said Booth, "it's even more remarkable that we have such breadth and variety – folk and bluegrass a-plenty, sure, but also jazz, rock and classical music, comedy and dance – the pool is deep and wide."
Over the past several months, Booth has recruited about a dozen performers for the variety show. Many have performed in the studios of KHOL for Booth’s weekly radio show. The lineup includes:
• Random Canyon Growlers: This bluegrass quartet consisting of David McMeekin (guitar), Jamie Drysdale (guitar), Larry Dressel (mandolin) and Matt Donovan (bass) has been getting steady work at local venues.
• Byron Tomingas: The classical guitarist has played with major symphonies, chamber groups and in more than 30 films and videos, but these days concentrates on composing and now performs only locally.
• Laff Staff: Jackson Hole's newest improv comedy troupe recently enjoyed nearly sold-out houses in the Black Box Studio Theater in the Center for the Arts.
• The Outskirts: Michelle Bevier, Susan Jones and Molly Moon Thorn challenge convention and defy stereotypes with blues and bluegrass, rock and reggae, twang and two-stepping swing, mostly original with a smattering of favorite covers.
• The Outfit: Playing its own hip-hop/nu jazz, this sextet – Kyle Johnson (keyboards), JT Schoonover (saxes), Corey Wheeler (bass), Justin McCalla (drums), Mac Monroe (percussion) and Chris DeMarco (vocals, turntables) – is making some of the most original music in Jackson Hole.
Others on the program include a jazz trio assembled by Jason Fritts, cowboy singer John Sidle, the Jackson Hole Brass Quintet, Flamenco dancer Emy DiGrappa, actors from the Off Square Theatre Company, members of Dancers' Workshop, and others. Lineup is subject to change.
