The legendary percussionist Pete Escovedo performs with Jackson Hole's own Latin jazz unit Calle Mambo at 8:00 p.m. in Center Theater Theater.
Escovedo is the artist known for breaking down the barriers between smooth jazz, salsa, Latin jazz and contemporary music. After performing with various California bands, Pete and his brothers, Coke and Phil, formed the Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz band in 1960 and began performing around the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1970, Pete and Coke formed the band Azteca, which toured the United States with Stevie Wonder and The Temptations, and recorded two albums on Columbia records that are now considered collectors items, "Azteca" and "Pyramid of the Moon." Escovedo toured and performed with the Carlos Santana band, with whom he recorded three albums, "Moonflower," "Oneness" and "Inner Secrets."
Other artists with whom Pete has collaborated include Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Stephen Stills, Billy Cobham, Anita Baker, George Duke, Boz Scaggs, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Marlena Shaw, Barry White, Arturo Sandoval, Chick Corea, Prince, and many others. He's been named Jammie Jazz Musician of the Year and Bammie Latin Musician of the Year, and in 1989 received a Grammy nomination. Today, Pete Escovedo leads one of the top Latin Jazz Orchestras in the country, performing his own unique music throughout the world.
